I wanted these to look like miniature architectural fragments rather than ordinary bookends. When placed beside your books, the column sits closely against the spines and gives the impression that your library is being supported by a small piece of an ancient Greek or Roman temple.

The Design & Inspiration

The Ionic Capital: I gave each column the recognizable scroll-shaped volutes associated with Ionic architecture. These curled capitals are one of the defining features of the Ionic order and give the bookends their strongest Greek and Roman character.

The Fluted Column: Deep vertical grooves run along the shaft of the column, inspired by the fluting commonly found on classical stone architecture. The repeated lines add texture and create subtle shadows that help the details remain visible even from across a bookshelf.

The Stepped Base: I built the column onto a broad architectural base inspired by the layered foundations used beneath classical structures. It gives the piece a solid, grounded appearance while keeping the footprint compact.

The Hidden Book Support: One of the most important parts of the design is almost invisible once your shelf is arranged.

A thin section of the base extends underneath your books. When you place books on top of it, their own weight helps anchor the bookend firmly against the shelf.

This makes the design especially effective with heavier hardcover books because the books themselves help hold the column in place instead of simply pushing against it from the side.

I wanted the support to disappear visually once the books are added, leaving the column itself as the main thing you see.

How It’s Made

I print each bookend layer by layer using PLA bioplastic, which is commonly made from renewable plant-based materials such as cornstarch.

Because every piece is individually 3D printed, subtle layer lines and small surface variations may be visible when viewed closely. These are natural characteristics of the additive manufacturing process and make each piece slightly unique.

Design Note: I designed the capital, fluted shaft, architectural base, back support, and thin book platform as a unified structure rather than using fragile decorative attachments. This keeps the classical details recognizable while creating a sturdy piece intended for everyday bookshelf use.

Care Instructions

Temperature: Keep indoors and away from intense heat sources. PLA can soften or warp above approximately 120°F/50°C, so please do not leave the bookends in a hot car or directly against a sunny window for extended periods.

Cleaning: Dust gently with a soft brush or microfiber cloth. If needed, spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
