The centerpiece is a large raven perched within a tall Gothic-inspired arch. I wanted the bird to feel substantial and sculptural rather than like a small decorative accent, so the layered feathers, strong beak, and upright pose take up most of the design.

Behind the raven, I used a pointed architectural frame inspired by Gothic windows and cathedral tracery. The tall arch gives the piece the feeling of an old carved monument or forgotten library ornament and creates a strong silhouette when it is placed beside a row of books.

The Design & Symbolism

The Raven: I made the raven the clear focus of the piece, with deeply layered feathers and a prominent profile. I wanted it to have the presence of an old carved guardian watching over the books beside it.

The Gothic Arch: I framed the raven inside a tall pointed arch with layered architectural detailing. This was one of the most important parts of the design because it gives the piece its dark academia and old-library character without needing a lot of extra ornamentation.

The Perch: Rather than placing the raven on a simple flat platform, I gave it a natural branch-like perch. This breaks up the architectural shapes and makes the raven feel like it has settled into the structure over time.

The Key: I placed an old-fashioned key into the lower section of the base as a smaller detail for people to discover when looking closely at the piece. For me, the key fits naturally with the dark academia theme and ideas of hidden knowledge, locked rooms, forgotten libraries, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.

The Architectural Base: I continued the Gothic detailing down into the pedestal so the raven, arch, and base feel like a single sculptural object rather than separate decorative pieces stacked together.

I designed this piece with book lovers in mind. Its narrow upright shape gives it a strong presence beside books without taking over the entire shelf, making it easy to work into an existing library or reading nook.

It looks especially at home beside classic literature, gothic fiction, fantasy, horror, mythology, antique books, leather-bound editions, and dark academia collections.

How It’s Made

I print each piece layer by layer using PLA bioplastic, which is commonly made from renewable plant-based materials such as cornstarch.

Because each piece is individually 3D printed, subtle layer lines and small surface variations may be visible. These are a natural part of the manufacturing process and make every piece slightly unique.

Design Note: I kept the raven, perch, Gothic arch, and base closely connected to one another instead of relying on thin floating details. The feather texture and architectural ornamentation are sculpted directly into the piece, creating a strong unified design while preserving the details that give it its character.

Care Instructions

Temperature: Keep indoors and away from intense heat sources. PLA can soften or warp above approximately 120°F/50°C, so please do not leave the piece in a hot car or directly against a sunny window for extended periods.

Cleaning: Dust gently with a soft brush or microfiber cloth. If needed, spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
