The Lore & Symbolism

Lilith has a long and complicated history that developed across different traditions over many centuries. Her name appears in ancient Near Eastern and Jewish traditions, and later folklore increasingly portrayed her as a dangerous night spirit or rebellious female figure.

In modern occult, pagan, and spiritual traditions, Lilith has often been reinterpreted as a symbol of independence, personal sovereignty, sexuality, rebellion, and refusing submission.

I wanted this statue to focus on that modern understanding of Lilith: not as a monster, but as a powerful figure who stands completely on her own terms.

The Wings: I gave Lilith a broad pair of feathered wings that create the strongest silhouette in the design. Wings have become one of the most recognizable elements in modern depictions of Lilith and help give her an otherworldly presence.

I kept the wings substantial and close enough to the central figure that they feel like part of one unified sculpture rather than delicate attachments.

The Owls: I placed two owls above Lilith’s shoulders as companions and symbols of night, hidden knowledge, and seeing what others cannot.

Owls are frequently connected with Lilith through modern interpretations of the famous ancient Mesopotamian Burney Relief, sometimes called the Queen of the Night relief. The identity of the figure in that relief remains debated, so I used the owl imagery as inspiration rather than presenting it as a definitive ancient depiction of Lilith.

For this statue, the owls reinforce her association with darkness, watchfulness, intuition, and knowledge that exists outside ordinary boundaries.

The Serpent: I wrapped a single serpent around Lilith’s leg and kept its head clearly visible near her thigh. The serpent is one of the strongest symbols in modern Lilith imagery and can represent transformation, forbidden knowledge, sexuality, rebirth, and independence.

I deliberately kept the snake close to her body rather than creating a large separate coil. This makes it feel more like a companion and part of Lilith herself rather than something she is fighting.

The Extended Wings: I wanted the wings to open outward rather than fold tightly behind her. This gives Lilith a commanding silhouette and reinforces the idea of freedom and refusal to be confined.

The Drapery: I used flowing classical fabric around the lower body rather than heavy armor or elaborate clothing. The drapery gives the statue the appearance of an old carved goddess sculpture while keeping the overall design focused on Lilith, the serpent, and her wings.

Her Expression: I designed Lilith with a calm, slightly downward gaze. She is not screaming, attacking, or confronting the viewer. I wanted her confidence to come from stillness rather than aggression.

The Rocky Base: Instead of placing her on an ornate temple pedestal, I gave Lilith a rugged stone-like ground beneath her feet. It gives the sculpture a more primal feeling and visually separates her from the more formal Olympian-style statues in my collection.

Why I Designed Her This Way

There are many interpretations of Lilith, and no single piece of ancient imagery defines exactly what she should look like.

For this design, I chose the symbols that have become most recognizable within modern Lilith imagery: wings, owls, the serpent, darkness, and an independent feminine figure.

Rather than filling the sculpture with dozens of small occult symbols, I focused on a few strong elements that remain recognizable from across a room. The wings establish her silhouette, the owls connect her with the night, and the serpent gives the statue an unmistakable dark goddess character.

I print each statue layer by layer using PLA bioplastic, which is commonly made from renewable plant-based materials such as cornstarch.

Because each statue is individually 3D printed, subtle layer lines and small surface variations may be visible. These are natural characteristics of the manufacturing process and make every piece slightly unique.

Design Note: I designed this Lilith with printability and durability in mind. Her arms remain close to the body, the serpent follows her leg instead of floating outward, the owls sit directly against the wings, and the wing roots are thick and substantial. The flowing clothing also connects naturally into the lower figure and base, helping create one strong sculpture.

She is the patron of those who refuse to dim their light, who trust their instincts over imposed rules, and who know that true power cannot be given—only claimed.

The Symbolism:
The Serpent
Coiled at Lilith’s feet or wound around her form, the serpent represents the wisdom that exists outside approved narratives. It is transformation incarnate—shedding dead skin to reveal what was always underneath. In Lilith’s story, the serpent isn’t corruption; it’s consciousness. It’s the knowledge that disobedience can be sacred when the alternative is self-betrayal.
The Twin Owls
In ancient Sumerian depictions, Lilith stood flanked by owls or bore their taloned feet herself. These nocturnal hunters symbolize her dominion over the unseen realms—the shadow self, hidden truths, and the wild places where conventional morality holds no sway. Owls see clearly in darkness. They are silent hunters, patient watchers, and fiercely protective mothers. They remind us that wisdom isn’t always gentle, and protection sometimes requires sharp talons.
Together, these elements create a portrait of the Dark Goddess: the one who left paradise because freedom mattered more than safety.
