The identity of the figure in that relief remains debated, so I used the owl imagery as inspiration rather than presenting it as a definitive ancient depiction of Lilith.

Athena

I designed Athena with a tall crested helmet, spear, flowing Greek robes, and a large round shield featuring an owl.

The Owl Shield: The owl was inspired by the famous Athenian owl tetradrachm, one of the most recognizable coins of ancient Greece. These coins paired Athena with her sacred owl, which became closely associated with Athens, wisdom, and the intellectual identity of the city.

Rather than adding a small owl beside her feet, I made it a prominent part of the shield so it remains clearly visible and becomes one of the defining features of the statue.

The Helmet and Spear: Athena’s crested helmet and spear represent her role as a goddess of warfare, but I wanted her pose to emphasize strategy rather than aggression. She stands calmly and confidently, reflecting her association with intelligence, planning, and disciplined strength.

The Classical Robes: I used long flowing drapery to give Athena the appearance of an old Greek temple statue while creating a solid and grounded silhouette.

Alexander the Great

I designed Alexander as a warrior king standing calmly with his sword grounded in front of him, a lion skin cloak draped around his shoulders, and the Gordian knot carved into the front of his pedestal.

The Lion Cloak: The lion skin references Herakles, one of the great heroes of Greek mythology. Alexander and the Macedonian royal house cultivated connections with Herakles, and heroic imagery became an important part of the way Alexander was represented. I used the lion cloak to give him that same larger-than-life quality while keeping the figure recognizable as a historical ruler.

The Sword: I positioned Alexander’s sword vertically with his hands resting on it rather than showing him actively fighting. I wanted the pose to feel monumental and controlled, representing military power without turning the statue into an action scene.

The Gordian Knot: The knot carved into the base references one of the most famous legends associated with Alexander. According to the story, whoever could unravel the seemingly impossible Gordian knot was destined to rule Asia. Alexander famously found his own decisive solution, and the story became a lasting symbol of bold thinking and overcoming impossible problems.

Why I Paired Them

Although Athena is a goddess and Alexander was a historical king, I like the contrast between them.

The Ionic Columns: I based the design around the Ionic order of classical architecture, recognizable by the distinctive curled volutes at the top of each column. I wanted those scroll-shaped capitals to immediately give the bookends an ancient Greek and Roman character.

The Fluted Columns: I gave each column deep vertical fluting inspired by classical stone columns. The repeated grooves create shadows and texture that help the architectural details stand out even from across a room.

The Classical Entablature: Above the columns, I added a broad layered architectural top inspired by the structures that traditionally rested above classical colonnades. This helps each bookend feel like a miniature section of an ancient temple or monumental building.

The Architectural Structure: Rather than using two freestanding columns, I integrated the pillars into a solid back and upper structure. I wanted the finished piece to look almost like a preserved fragment of an ancient building while also creating a strong and sturdy bookend.

The Hidden Support Brim: I designed a thin section of the base to slide underneath your books. Once the books are placed on top, their own weight helps hold the bookend against the shelf. This allows the bookend to support even heavy books without requiring an oversized decorative base that takes up valuable shelf space.

The Lore & Symbolism

Archangel Michael is one of the most recognizable angelic figures in Christian tradition. He is commonly depicted as a heavenly warrior and defender against evil, often wearing armor and carrying a sword while defeating a dragon or serpent.

I wanted to bring several pieces of traditional Saint Michael iconography together in this design without making the statue feel crowded. The wings, sword, armor, scales, and dragon each tell a different part of his story.

The Defeated Dragon: I placed the dragon directly on the front of the pedestal as one of the main symbols of the statue. It references the imagery of Revelation 12, where Michael and his angels battle the great dragon. In Christian art, that dragon became a powerful visual symbol of Satan, evil, and chaos being overcome.

Instead of wrapping a delicate dragon around Michael’s feet, I carved it into the base beneath him. I like the way this makes the victory feel permanent, almost as though the story has been carved into a monument dedicated to Michael.

The Sword: I gave Michael a large sword positioned directly in front of his body. Rather than raising it for an attack, he rests his hand on the hilt while the blade points downward. To me, this makes the sword feel less like an expression of aggression and more like a symbol of readiness, protection, divine authority, and strength under control.

The Armor: I designed Michael in classical warrior armor to emphasize his traditional role as commander and defender. The breastplate, bracers, and layered armor give him the appearance of a heavenly soldier without making the figure feel overly modern or militaristic.

The Wings: Michael’s large feathered wings rise closely behind his body and frame the entire figure. They immediately identify him as an angel while giving the statue a strong silhouette. I kept them close to the main sculpture so they feel substantial rather than delicate.

His Calm Gaze: I posed Michael looking slightly away from the viewer instead of staring directly forward. I wanted him to appear watchful and confident, as though the battle has already been won and he is standing guard over what remains.

The Cloak: I used a heavy cloak behind the armor to give Michael the appearance of a classical monument. The flowing fabric also helps visually connect his wings and body, giving the sculpture a more solid and unified form.

The Lore & Symbolism

Alexander the Great was the king of Macedon and one of the most famous military leaders in history. He created an empire that stretched across much of the known world and became a lasting symbol of ambition, conquest, leadership, and glory. Over time, Alexander’s image grew beyond history and took on an almost legendary quality.

I wanted this statue to reflect that larger-than-life reputation while still feeling grounded in classical sculpture. Rather than showing him in the middle of battle, I designed him in a composed, victorious stance that feels more like a monument than an action scene.

The Gordian Knot: I carved the Gordian knot onto the front of the base because it is one of the clearest symbols associated with Alexander. According to legend, an impossible knot in Phrygia was said to be destined to be undone by the future ruler of Asia. Alexander famously solved the challenge in his own decisive way, and the story has come to symbolize bold action, destiny, and refusing to be trapped by convention.

The Lion Cloak and Head: The lion skin is one of the most recognizable attributes of Herakles, and Alexander was often linked to him in art and royal symbolism. I used the lion cloak and head here to evoke that heroic association. It gives Alexander a mythic quality, suggesting strength, kingship, and his connection to the heroic traditions of the Greek world.

The Sword: I gave Alexander a long sword planted firmly before him, with both hands resting on the hilt. I wanted the sword to feel symbolic rather than chaotic. It represents military power and conquest, but because it is grounded and held in a calm pose, it also suggests discipline, authority, and control.

The owl was one of the most important parts of this design for me. I wanted something that immediately connected Athena to Athens without simply placing a small owl beside her feet. I brought the shield forward and made the owl a bold part of the sculpture so it can be clearly seen from the front.

The Lore & Symbolism

Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategy, craftsmanship, and warfare. Unlike a god representing uncontrolled violence or rage, Athena is closely associated with disciplined strength, planning, intelligence, and victory through skill.

I wanted that distinction to shape the entire statue. Rather than showing Athena charging into battle, I gave her a calm, upright stance. She is armed and unmistakably powerful, but she feels controlled and thoughtful rather than aggressive.

The Athenian Owl: The owl on the shield is based on one of my favorite pieces of ancient Greek imagery, the owl found on Athenian tetradrachm coins. Classical Athenian tetradrachms famously paired Athena on the obverse with her owl on the reverse, creating an image that became strongly associated with Athens.

I used that imagery as inspiration rather than trying to reproduce the coin exactly. I enlarged the owl and worked it into the shield so it becomes one of the main focal points of the statue. It gives the piece a direct visual connection to Athena, Athens, wisdom, and the ancient Greek world.

The Corinthian Helmet: I gave Athena a tall crested Corinthian-style helmet to create the strong silhouette I associate with classical depictions of Greek warriors. It immediately establishes her martial side while keeping the overall statue elegant and traditional.

The Shield: I positioned her round shield toward the front of the statue specifically so the owl would remain visible. The large shield gives Athena a strong defensive presence and balances the vertical shape of the spear and helmet.

The Spear: I placed a long spear in Athena’s right hand as another symbol of her warrior aspect. I kept it close to her body so it feels like part of her composed stance rather than making the statue look as though she is actively attacking.

The Aegis: Across Athena’s chest I included the protective aegis with the Gorgon image at its center, one of the traditional elements that helps make her instantly recognizable. I kept the detailing bold enough to stand out while still fitting naturally into the folds and armor around her shoulders.

Her Expression: I designed Athena with a calm face and a slightly distant gaze. I wanted her to look as though she is observing and thinking before acting, which felt much more appropriate for a goddess associated with wisdom and strategy.

The Classical Robes: Her long Greek-inspired robes create the flowing appearance of an old temple sculpture while giving the statue a solid, grounded form. The drapery contrasts with the harder shapes of the helmet, spear, and shield without making the design feel overly busy.
